Description
This piece showcases the Ihiala masquerade tradition, where respect and age are held in the highest regard. The masquerades are arranged on a grand staircase, standing in order of seniority. At the very top, the oldest masquerade stands, his pure white hair showing his age, wisdom, and elevated ancestral status. Just one step below him is the second eldest, with his hair a blend of black and white symbolizing his transition toward a more elder role. We also captured the youngest masquerade as he bows low, showing respect to those above him. The background of this piece is very rich and detailed as we show villagers cheering in celebration, there is also a man playing the traditional ekwe drum, filling the air with its rhythm. The setting is lush, with palm trees swaying and palm leaves scattered on the floor, giving the the artwork a detailed look.
